This new dot-US ccTLD will be re-launched effective April 24, 2002. The
space will now be available to a far greater range of individuals and
corporations.
General background
In November 2001, NeuStar, Inc., assumed operational responsibility for dot-US.
Neustar is relying on ICANN accredited registrars and newly accredited
dot-US registrars to expand the availability of dot-US to the general public.
Currently, the policy surrounding dot-US domain names means that names
are only available in the locality space at the third level and above,
for example, www.wyith.baltimore.md.us.
Short memorable Internet addresses like www.domainavenue.us, www.wyith.us etc. are not possible under
the existing dot-US policy. However, for the first time ever, individuals,
organizations and businesses will be able to establish an American
identity on the Internet.
Why register dot-US
Market research has indicated that dot-US will be a highly sought after
domain space particularly for those companies with a US presence wanting
to strengthen their brand in the US market. The dot-US brand will be
complimentary to an organization's online marketing strategy, similar
to the experience of other countries with their local ccTLDs such as
dot-UK (United Kingdom, over 3 million names registered to date)
and dot-DE (Germany, over 5million names registered to date).
The opportunity is too large to ignore. The statistics speak for themselves.
United States registrants currently accounts for more than two thirds of
the .com domain name market. This translates to approximately 20 million
registrants: many of these existing registrants will wish to secure their
brand in the dot-US space; many new registrants will choose to register
dot-US ahead of .com; and, many registrants who could not find an available
name in .com, will now be able to choose the same name in dot-US.
Sunrise period: Mar-4 to Apr-16-2000
The Sunrise service, beginning March 4, 2002 and running until April 16 2002,
enables owners of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) trademarks to apply
for their chosen domain names in the dot-US expanded name space. As such,
applicants will not be able to pre-register any name during this period,
only those matching US trademarks. After April 16 2002, all dot-US will be
served on the first-come-first-served basis. All dot-US second-level domain
names not registered during Sunrise, or reserved by the Registry, will be
available for first-come-first-served registration from April 24 2002.
Registrants who missed out on registering their chosen names in the .biz,
.com, .net or .org spaces, or who just want to establish an American identity
online, have a golden opportunity with the dot-US!
Policy restrictions
Applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
To be in compliance with the dot-US Requirement, all registrants for the
dot-US domain must be either: (1) a natural person (i) who is a citizen
or permanent resident of the United States of America or any of its
possessions or territories, or (ii) whose primary place of domicile is
in the United States of America or any of its possessions, or
(2) an entity or organization that is (i) incorporated within one of
the fifty (50) U.S. states, the District of Columbia, or any of the
United States possessions or territories or (ii) organized or otherwise
constituted under the laws of a state of the United States of America,
the District of Columbia or any of its possessions or territories, or
(3) an entity or organization (including a federal, state, or local government
of the United States, or a political subdivision thereof) that has a
bona fide presence in the United States. This dot-US Requirement is intended
to ensure that only those individuals or organizations that have a substantive
connection to the United States are permitted to register for dot-US domain
names. It will be the responsibility of the applicant to certify that they
satisfy these rules and continue to satisfy those rules over the course of
the licence.

All dot-US registrations require that the nameservers are situated in the
